Doing This To an American Flag Could Become a Felony in One State

Flags of specific countries are important when it comes to nationalism and patriotism of each and every country around the world. The flag is a symbol of many different things for many different countries, but, they all are important to the indigenous people of the country. The American flag, for example, is a symbol of liberty and freedom to Americans across the United States. It also symbolizes the men and women who risk their lives everyday to make sure everyone in the country has the freedom the flag represents.

In Arizona, however, people do not exactly respect people's pride in their nation and freedom, and allegedly, flag thefts have become a predominant issue in the state. A state senator from Arizona has decided to crack down on this problem and proceed with legal actions for those who are caught stealing American flags.

State senator John Kavanagh has issued a bill to coincide with an already in-tact law. The current law that exists determines the severity of a theft by the total value of what is stolen. Said law states that in Arizona, it’s a misdemeanor to steal anything worth less than $1,000, punishable by six months in the county jail and a $2,500 fine.

But, Senator Kavanagh thinks you can't put a true price on freedom – what the American flag represents. The bill that he issued would punish anyone who steals an American flag as a class 6 felony, rather than a misdemeanor in the state of Arizona. This means, if you steal an American flag in Arizona, you could spent up to two years in jail.
