Meet the Author of Harry Harambee’s Kenyan Sundowner

Gerald Everett Jones’ latest book takes us across to the Sub-Saharan African Country of Kenya. The award-winning author effortlessly transforms his readers’ experience from being passive observers to find themselves thoroughly invested in this journey. Here’s what he shares about himself and his new book, “Harry Harambee’s Kenyan Sundowner.”

Hi Gerald, you tell us about your new book, “Harry Harambee’s Kenyan Sundowner”?

A lonely widower from Los Angeles buys a tour package to East Africa on the promise of hookups and parties. What he finds instead are new reasons to live.

Aldo Barbieri, a slick Italian tour operator, convinces Harry to join a group of adventuresome “voluntourists.” In a resort town on the Indian Ocean, Harry doesn’t find the promised excitement with local ladies. But in the supermarket he meets Esther Mwemba, a demure widow who works as a bookkeeper. The attraction is strong and mutual, but Harry gets worried when he finds out that Esther and Aldo have a history. They introduce him to Victor Skebelsky, rumored to be the meanest man in town. Skebelsky has a plan to convert his grand colonial home and residential compound into a rehab center – as a tax dodge. The scheme calls for Harry to head up the charity. He could live like a wealthy diplomat and it won’t cost him a shilling!

Harry has to come to terms with questions at the heart of his character: Is corruption a fact of life everywhere? Is all love transactional?

Who would enjoy reading it the most? Why?

Fans of literary fiction who aren’t locked into any particular genre. I believe the fascination of literary fiction is to get inside a flawed character who is forced to dig deep into his soul. He’s not necessarily someone worthy of admiration, but we may be impressed by his courage. We might see ourselves differently as a result. And as we follow him through the strory, we go through his painful discoveries without having to look too closely at ourselves in the process. But in the end, we know we all face the same questions and anxieties.

How do the characters from the book come alive? What makes them so appealing?

Harry sets out as a tourist, a passive observer. He watches the world from the backseat of an excursion vehicle. But then when he develops an emotional attachment and decides to stay in-country, he must begin to think like a resident, like a citizen. He must decide how much he is willing to become involved, how much he’s willing to commit. There’s bravery in his decision.

What are some of your cherished moments from your time in Kenya that may or may not have made their way in “Harry Harambee’s Kenyan Sundowner”?

Most of the time, my wife lived in Diani Beach, a small resort town on the white sands of the Indian Ocean. Some of my favorite times were Sunday afternoons at Forty Thieves Bar and Grill on the beach. It was a buffet for ten bucks. Almost everyone you knew in town dropped in at some time. There was a band playing, alternating American pop coverage with authentic South African rhythms. We all sat there, gossiping, eating, and drinking until the sun went down. And our two terriers amused themselves endlessly chasing crabs in the surf. (This scene isn’t in the book!)

If it is made into a movie, who do you think should play Harry Harambee’s character?

Christian Bale has proven he can play just about anybody, but think of him plumped up with thinning hair as he was to play Dick Cheney. But with more affability and heart. I describe Harry as a bit pudgy, something of a couch potato, but with a friendliness and charm. Then again, Jack Nicholson just the way he shows up these days?

Mystery-thrillers or literary fiction, what do you enjoy writing the most? Why?

I prefer to write literary fiction because there are no rules. Almost none at all. But I enjoy writing mystery-thrillers because after I get going, I let myself go and let the characters make the decisions. And the ending is always a surprise, to me and I hope to the readers.

What are you reading, watching, and loving? Any recommendations?

After I started writing the book, I realized its similarities of setting and expat intrigue with The Heart of the Matter by Graham Greene (set it Sierra Leone) and The Constant Gardener by John Le Carré (set in Kenya). I reread both of those recently, and the movie of Gardener is well done. There’s also a movie of the Greene story. It’s available to stream on Amazon and I intend to watch it for the first time soon.

Rapid Fire time! Answer the following questions with the first thing that comes to your mind.

Orange juice or Coffee

Organic French Roast. At least two cups with soymilk first thing in the morning.

Writing in silence or with music

I’m a music lover – mostly classical and jazz, and especially opera. But if I listen while I’m writing my head gets jammed and it’s a distraction.

Kindle or Paperback

Kindle especially when traveling. Paperbacks when making notes, especially for research. I love a paper book, but if I get one I have to gift it because I just don’t have the space to hold them all. That’s another reason for Kindle – a thousand books in your library in the cloud.

Podcast or Video

When I’m recording a podcast in the studio, I love the sound of my voice in the headphones, and I relax. I enjoy doing video but I tend to be both animated and self-conscious at the same time.

One item from your “bucket” list you’d like to share

I’ve often thought of investing in an art gallery on Canyon Drive in Santa Fe. I’d work there part time, but never miss the parties on openings. I’m not sure my wife is ready to let me do this, though.

Favorite holiday destination

I lived in Paris on the Left Bank for a time as a student. Never bored going back. My French has gotten better. They now accuse me of being either Belgian or British. They know I’m not local! My wife Georja went to school in Rome, and that’s at least one place where I shut up and let her talk.

A favorite author you’d love to meet

I’d love to have a leisurely chat with Hypatia of Alexandria. And I’ll ask her what she thinks of the book I wrote about her. Most of her writings have been lost, so I’m sure the conversation would be revealing – particularly regarding who destroyed them and why.

Travel Prices Surge

Travel Prices Surge

The Price of Travel Surges

I am sure that many of you have noticed by now how much it costs to travel anywhere. The prices have surged, and just absolutely skyrocketed. Even people like Shalom Lamm have noticed the price increase, due to the pandemic being over with.

That’s what this is really about. There’s a very noticeable price increase in hotel rooms and flights, since the pandemic is over with. The pandemic isn’t as bad as it was. People are getting their vaccinations. Life is going back to normal, which means the prices of things like this are going up.

You may be wondering why the prices of hotels and flights would start increasing now that the pandemic is over, but think about it. They didn’t get as much business because of the pandemic, and now that it’s over, and absolutely everyone is travelling, they’re going to raise their prices.

They’re increasing their prices to try making money back for all the money that they lost over the past year. They also know that people are going to pay the prices, because everyone is ready to get out and do things. People are ready to celebrate the pandemic being over, so they are ready to go places, and do things. They know that people will pay it, and obviously people are. This is the price we have to pay for a year of a pandemic, and having to not go do fun things.

These businesses took a hit from this pandemic, maybe worse than most. People were traveling less, which means hotel rooms, and flights, weren’t needed as much, or as often, as they normally were. They wound up losing a lot of their normal business due to the pandemic, and they still had their normal bills to pay to run the business. They have to keep their employees paid, their hotel, or plane, clean, the rooms clean, keep the airport up, and running, fuel for planes, the list is literally endless. They still maintained all of this, while taking in a lot less income that they would have normally been making, thanks to the pandemic hitting. Now that it’s over with, they’re going to want to try making up for that lost money. You would too though, I am sure.

However, even Shalom Lamm knows that this price surge won’t stay here forever. We won’t have to pay these insane extra prices. Hotel rooms and flights will go back to their normal rates before long. They just need time to adjust, and make back some of the money that they lost from the pandemic hitting last year. Businesses were hurt just like us.

We will just have to wait it out, until the high prices adjust, and drop back down. They won’t be high like this for much longer. Let’s let them work on making some of their profit back that they lost out on last year due to the pandemic. They’re helping us out by still running, and giving us a place to stay while we go out of town on vacation since this pandemic is finally over.

This is What Wheelchair Seat Pads Can Do For Your Back

This is What Wheelchair Seat Pads Can Do For Your Back

Does your grandmother always complain about how her wheelchair seat is extremely uncomfortable? Do the rims always hurt her back, and the seat gets moist real quick?

Well, she isn’t the only one.

For several wheelchair users, it is difficult to stay erect and not experience the constant feeling of sliding. Further, many are affected by pressure sores, which culminate into serious infections. On hot days, non-breathable seats will cause sweating within no time, making it impossible to have a pleasant sitting experience.

In such scenarios, changing the wheelchair from time to time can be an expensive affair. However, wheelchair seat pads are a quick and effective solution that can do wonders for one’s back and prevent discomfort issues.

Let’s understand in detail:

How Does A Wheel Chair Seat Pad Help Your Back?

Confused about what a wheelchair seat pad is? It is nothing but a cushion placed on your wheelchair to make sitting comforting and sustainable. These seat pads are found in a variety of materials like foam, gel, foam/gel combination, ROHO (air-filled), and memory foam. For back support, hygienic sitting, and posture improvement, memory foam wheelchair seat pads are widely preferred.

Here is how they keep your back safe and pressure-free on a wheelchair:

Equal Distribution Of Pressure

One of the biggest contributions to back pain is when pressure gets focused on a singular point along the spine. A traditional wheelchair induces strain only on the hips, pelvis, and thighs. This can cause fatigue and cramps in these areas leading to conditions like pressure sores, arthritis, and osteoporosis.

A wheelchair seat pad tackles the problem effectively. It ensures that all the body weight is evenly redistributed. This removes the strain from a particular area and allows smooth circulation of blood. You feel more relaxed and energized, and prevent circulatory issues from arising – a common problem for wheelchair-bound people.

Maintains Better Posture

A flimsy wheelchair can make you slouch for relief and ruin your posture. Once you slide down, it’s difficult to sit back firmly. A bad posture messes with your spine alignment and has deep-rooted implications for your long-term joint health.

A wheelchair seat pad ensures that you sit erect in your chair for the entire time. It is not slippery and has good friction to hold you together. The cushions adapt to the curvature of your body, support your hips and help you keep up with healthy sitting postures.

Affordable Treatment For Your Back

Well, certain medical costs of treating chronic back pain and spine disorders are skyrocketing. It takes a prolonged time to completely relieve you and comes with side effects. Although chronic conditions require medical assistance, a wheelchair seat pad is recommended by several doctors as a precautionary measure.

How does it help? Your wheelchair seat pad is an affordable long-term investment to improve posture, relieve pressure, and help circulation. It is easy to maintain, and lightweight to carry around.

Keep A Check On Temperature And Moisture

It can be tiresome to sit on a regular wheelchair when the surface is constantly sticking to your body. The lack of ventilation aggravates your pressure sores. Further, the temperature is constantly building up to add to your discomfort. All you want to do is to be showered with something cold for your back.

Well, to save your skin (quite literally)  wheelchair seat pads perform this task within no time. It facilitates a soothing experience. The gel technology can divert heat away, while ventilation holes allow for airflow and prevent moisture buildup on your skin.

A wheelchair seat pad is resistant to your body heat and channels the energy to adjust to the shape of your body. This provides immediate assistance to your sore back while letting your skin breathe freely.

Why Is A Memory Foam Wheelchair Seat Pad A Perfect Buy?

Since the 1960s, memory foam has been the top pick for several mattress and pillow manufacturers. Here is why you should buy it for your wheelchair as well.

  • Memory foam wheelchair seat pads have exceptional adaptability to your body size.
  • It keeps a check on the temperature and provides relief to the pain-afflicted areas.
  • The material restricts unwanted movement for your body to feel comforted and focus on healing.
  • Being allergy-free, it does not attract any kind of dust mites or harmful components.

Final Thoughts

It’s time to close doors to uncomfortable sitting and infection-prone wheelchairs. Your wheelchair seat pad will be your one-stop solution to all your back aches, uneasy slouching, and sweaty sensations.

It is the best thing you can treat your back with over any kind of expensive surgery or medications. So don’t indulge in any further thinking. Remember that your back deserves to be protected and kept healthy at all costs.

Are you a Collector? Why Not Make a Living from Your Passion?

Are you a Collector? Why Not Make a Living from Your Passion?

People from all walks of life get tremendous pleasure from collecting things; it might be antique furniture, sports memorabilia, luxury watches or even promotional sets that are given out when you buy certain products. There’s nothing wrong with such a passion and if you are one of the many who love what you collect, why not start a niche business and enjoy a good living from doing what you love?

Knowledge-Based

Of course, all collectables involve high levels of knowledge and the more you know about your chosen field, the better. The Internet hosts a wealth of information and a few hours of Googling will certainly teach you some things that you did not know. You should also be very confident that you have something to offer other collectors, otherwise people will not have any incentive when dealing with you. Take a leading Australian ceremonial sword dealer as an example, https://www.swordworld.com.au/, where you can read all about various eras and the swords that were used at that time. As a dealer, you should offer all site visitors useful information about every aspect of your field, with a blog page specifically for this purpose.

Essential Contacts

Any collectable has a network of passionate players and if you are looking to sell sought-after items, you will need to have contacts in the auction world and other events where such items are offered up for sale. If you’ve been an avid collector for quite a few years, you will no doubt already have a long list of useful contacts and this can form the basis of your connections.

What Are You Offering?

If you are planning to launch a collectables business, you need to define what you are offering; that isn’t as obvious as you might think, indeed, you could set up a website that doesn’t buy or sell, rather it offers free information and you would make money by advertising on your site. While some collectors/dealers are very secretive about their field, the ones that do well are the dealers who are happy to offer free advice to all. Once you have defined your goals, you can set about researching how to register a collectables business and put together a comprehensive business plan. Here’s an interesting blog on how storytelling goes hand in hand with advertising.

Web Design

Of course, in this digital age, your website will be your window to the world and it should therefore be of a professional standard and designed in a way that is easy to navigate. Using a single provider, you can obtain the following services:

  • Domain name registration
  • Website design & construction
  • Web hosting
  • Site administration
  • Digital marketing
  • Cyber-security

Simply search online for a leading digital marketing agency and they will tailor their services to suit you and your business. From the marketer’s perspective, it is much easier to promote a niche company than a mainstream business. So, you should expect to see your site on page 1 of Google search results if you enlist the services of such an agency and that will be very good for business.

What to Expect at the Summer 2021 Olympic Games

What to Expect at the Summer 2021 Olympic Games

Summer Olympics 2021

Father George Rutler graduated as the youngest of his High School class at age 16, and at age 26 became a Priest and later converted to a pastor of Catholicism. The Summer Olympics this year begins Friday, July 23 2021 and ends Sunday August 8, 2021. Rutler will be an excited spectator. 50 years ago he was ordained as an Anglican Priest and later converted to Catholicism. He wrote many books, including one entitled “Introducing Squash Rackets”. On July 14,2021, he became 70 years old. Sometimes he is referred to as “The Renaissance Man”. He plays squash, is into boxing, and is good friends with former President George W. Bush and the late Mother Teresa.

Father Rutler doesn’t compartmentalize, he believes the spiritual and the physical go together. A physically fit person is generally a joyful person. And when a physical fit and spiritual are combined, that is a great combination. People like that have a lot of influence, so Father Rutler promotes it whenever possible. He is looking forward to the Summer Olympics kicking off and is excited to watch the competition unfold.

When George W. Bush was the Governor of Texas, he liked Father Rutler so much that he made him an “Honorary Texan” after he assisted firefighters and police officers during the terrorist attacks on 9/11.

Since Father George Rutler likes sports and has written several books on sports, he will definitely like the Summer Olympics. This year it will be in Tokyo and the U.S. is sending the second largest team in Olympic History.

Things to Consider if You Are Going Camping

Things to Consider if You Are Going Camping

If you are going camping, then you should make sure that you are prepared for your adventure, how long will you be going for, what do you want to do whilst you are camping, who are you going with and where are you going are a few of the things to add to your list. To help you get properly prepared here is a more in depth look at things you should think about before you head off.

What do I need to think about?

There could be a lot to consider so make sure you are prepared; many people have found themselves in an awkward situation of not having enough provisions to last them their entire trip. The most important thing you will want to ensure is that you have;

  1. Enough clean drinking water to keep you properly hydrated.
  2. Battery power, oddly enough, before food you will want to take enough battery power with you for your mobile devices. You will, at the very least, have your phone with you and you will need enough juice to send a message or make a call should you need to.
  3. A suitable bag is really important, you want something that is going to be comfortable, but also be up for whatever you throw at it, something like a Feel Free Gear’s camping bag would be a great choice. There are a variety of styles and materials that even cover things like waterproofing.
  4. Food, prepare or buy enough packaged food to last you. You could take pre-prepared food or you could go all out and take a small BBQ with you, or make a BBQ when you get to where you are going and cook your own grub.
  5. The people you are going with will most likely determine what kind of trip this will be so think about that also. For example, some will want an intrepid adventure, others will want a calming retreat, somewhere they can sit back and consider life, others may use it as an excuse to have late night campfire parties. You may want to use the trip to do everything so make sure you have all you need, and check out these hacks on preparation.
  6. Think about what it is that you want to do whilst you are camping, you might just want to go for walks in the woods or forest, or you might want to go swimming, cycling, kayaking or even paddle boarding.
  7. Clothes can sometimes be forgotten, not entirely, of course, but the type of clothes that are best suited for the trip you are going on. When camping, you will want clothes that either keep you cool or keep you warm against the elements and that protect you against things like grazes, scratches and bites.
  8. Footwear is a really important consideration, the last thing you want is a sprained ankle or similar injury just because you weren’t prepared and didn’t take the proper footwear with the correct support.

Off you go then

That should be all you need to consider, although camping is quite a personal thing so take what you need to make sure you are comfortable. Most importantly, take enough clean water, battery power, a suitable bag and enough food to keep you going!

How to Find a Qualified Lawyer to Handle Your Family Law Case

How to Find a Qualified Lawyer to Handle Your Family Law Case

If you’re having some legal trouble that requires the intervention of a family lawyer, you need to find the best one. Making the right choice can be difficult if you’ve never worked with one before. But there are tips you can use to help you identify the right person for the job. After all, you don’t want the stress of paying a lawyer and getting zero results. With that said, here are some things you can do to find a qualified family lawyer.

What Type of Legal Service Do You Need?

To begin with, you need to consider the type of legal service you want. In as much as you need a family lawyer, such experts often have different specialties. For instance, if you want custody of the kids, you must ensure that your attorney can help you get it. Some family lawyers only deal with couples on divorce cases. Also, you may want to have the matter resolved outside or inside the court. All these factors have an impact on which attorney you should end up selecting.

Start by Getting Recommendations

If you have friends or family who know a good family lawyer, this can save you time. All you need to do is ask around. If they’ve worked with someone they liked, you can be sure you’ll get recommendations. It’s good to ask a few people before you decide to work with the first option you get. This way, you can have some alternatives to consider. After all, these attorneys often have their hands full.

Setting Up an Interview

After you’ve got some options, it’s time to start the process of narrowing them down. If you have time, you can set up an interview with some of the attorneys you believe would do the best job. That way, you can eliminate those that don’t meet your case’s specifications. During the interview, you will have time to ask questions that will help you make a clear decision.

Consider Personality

It is also critical that you think about getting to know the character of a lawyer. This is important given the kind of case in question. Family law cases are sensitive. You should work with someone that makes you feel comfortable. There shouldn’t be any sort of mistrust in question. With a qualified lawyer, you can be sure that your needs will be a priority.

Track Record is Key

You also need to think about the lawyer’s record of accomplishment. This is important as it helps you to have confidence in what they’re capable of doing. If they’ve helped many others handle the same issues, then you can rest easy knowing you’re in good hands. Online reviews and testimonials make it easy for you to know if a lawyer is fit for the job.

Wrapping Up

Don’t rush to choose an attorney before you’ve done a thorough research. Hiring a lawyer can be quite expensive. You need to put your money to the best use. Go for someone with a lot of experience and many success stories from cases they’ve handled.

5 Advantages for Using Laser Therapy to Improve Neuropathy

5 Advantages for Using Laser Therapy to Improve Neuropathy

Peripheral nerves are the nerves found outside your brain and spinal cord. Peripheral nerves connect body organs to the Central Nervous System (CNS) and pass communication between the CNS to the body organs. Peripheral neuropathy occurs when the peripheral nerves malfunction due to damage or destruction. Malfunctioning nerves send pain signals when there are no offending stimuli or fail to send pain signals when you are in harm’s way.

There exists many types of neuropathies each with a unique presentation and treatment options. Neuropathies can be classified according to the type of nerve damage involved and may be mononeuropathy or polyneuropathy. A mononeuropathy will suggest that a single nerve is damaged whereas a polyneuropathy occurs when more than one nerve is damaged. Neuropathies may be due to:

  • Generalized diseases such as diabetes
  • Injury
  • Alcohol and toxins
  • Infections and autoimmune disorders
  • Medications

Laser Therapy

Whereas medicines are used mainly to treat neuropathy, low-level laser therapy proves to be quite efficient in improving neuropathy symptoms. Laser therapy does not cause tissue destruction or burning since the laser used is of low intensity.

Neuropathic pain utilizes cold laser treatment. The laser treatment stimulates blood circulation in the affected parts, allowing damaged nerve fibers to receive oxygen supply and nutrition. The nerves are then able to repair themselves, leading to reduced pain and discomfort.

The laser treatment lasts for 5 to 15 minutes and is painless. It helps relieve inflammation and facilitates wound healing. Depending on the severity of your complications, you might require multiple laser treatments weekly. Laser therapy has many advantages such as:

1- Reduced Pain in Patients

Patients who use cold laser treatment have reduced pain and improved functionality of the body parts under treatment. Cold laser treatment reduces pain and inflammation in the applied area by improving blood circulation and helping nerves repair themselves. The reduction in pain may also be due to the production of endorphins which are natural chemicals that reduce pain.

2- The Procedure has Minimal Risks

Cold laser therapy, when done correctly, does not lead to tissue injury or burning. The procedure is easy and short and therefore does not require that you are put under anesthesia. The latter eliminates risks associated with surgery, such as infection, tissue damage, or scarring.

3- The Procedure can be Performed at Home

There are a variety of low-level lasers that you can purchase to treat neuropathic pain from home. You may have to consider the level of power output you will need from your device. You may decide to buy a class 1 to a class 4 laser device to help alleviate your pain at the comfort of your home.

4- Laser Therapy can be Done on an Out-patient Basis
