The fireplace was a must in early America. As the center of the house, it provided heat, housed numerous fires for cooking and baking, and served as the core of family gatherings. In the 1600s and early 1700s, the typical fireplace was a walk-in: a broad, deep, open break, generally with only the shortest view of a robe, or no cloak at all. Usually, the firebox was wider than it was long, especially in the homes of Dutch colonizers.

Fireplaces in English homes were smaller and more efficient. In New England and the Mid-Atlantic, colonial houses had central chimneys with numerous grooves, so that fires could be lit in two or more rooms on each floor. The central stone or brick mass also tended to keep the heat, keeping the house warmer in general. In the South, fire hearths were placed on the far reaches of the house to reduce the amount of heat, keeping the house cooler in summer.

In the early 19th century, around 1795, Mr. Benjamin Thompson, named Count Rumford, began fiddling with the firebox project. The result of his efforts is the basis for all open fire hearths today. Taller than it is wide and smaller and shallower than old styles, the Rumford fire hearth has sharp angles on both sides. The clever design throws more radiant heat into a room than its predecessors. Another key element is its narrow throat, which depletes both smoke and air at a higher speed, acting as a control against backdrafts.

The Georgian Era ( 1714-1837)

The fireplaces from this period were of large size and were usually designed a full focal point of the room. This view was achieved using cast iron grates and large fire baskets to create large openings for the chimney. These were accompanied by uncomplicatedly designed hardwood circles and marble chimneys. 

The Victorian Era (1837-1901)

This period is divided into the early and mid-Victorian fireplaces and the late Victorian fireplaces. Early and mid-Victorian chimneys are usually very decorated with uncomplicated designs focusing somewhat on a more floreal model in casting. This design has proven to become very popular in the fireplaces of modern-day reproduction, while they take their inspiration from these original antique chimney designs.

Art Nouveau (1880-1914)

This era in the history of design is such an important step and by many people, it is classified as the bridge between the historicalism of neo-classicalism and modernism. 

Our ancient cast iron fireplaces and ancient fire circles are a tribute to this era in time. We have professionally restored them to such a standard as to compliment this revolutionary movement in the history of design, and we take great pride in showing the work of these great designers in its truest form.

The Edwardian Era (1900-1920)

During the Edwardian era, another style became known as art and style crafts, which was mainly focused on using local materials for the fireplace and bringing them home.  The theme for art and art style was always natural and materials were locally sourced, where possible. A range of materials were used during this period, including mainly cast iron, bricks, and tiles, and in some of the higher-market houses, made to measure beaten copper hearths were a popular design.

While the overall shape of the modern fireplace has not changed much over time, the dimensions, uses and design options for today’s fireplaces are more diverse and creative than ever imagined. Dr. Jordan Sudberg explains that businesses are built on marketing. Marketing stresses establishing the foundation for the business’s cost structure, revenue projection, and profit breakout. Most newbies make a significant mistake assuming the numbers will fall right out of the proverbial air once they have a business. One has to know the basics.

The basics are essential if one wants a lighter, more sustainable framework: Create their pricing model; create revenue projections; create appropriate profit levels. Depending on location and industry, initial capital is also required to register. The cost could also come in other forms, like a personal loan depending on the size of the endeavor and the business owner’s experience.

Once that initial base is built up, it is necessary to build an incentive structure for one’s management team (which makes up the bulk of the spending). When evaluating management plans and establishing goals, start with top-line revenue goals. Sudberg, who has over 20 years of marketing experience, also says to attain this, one also needs to understand how much of their revenue is invested in advertising and how much is tied to all-on-all media spends.

Q. Can you tell us about your book?

Race For What? is part journey of a road less traveled and part guide meant to dare white folks to analyze where we came from, where we are going, and the value of healing the harm that has been done.

In this memoir, I tell the story of growing up in a black community and witnessing racism firsthand, as well as my successes and missteps in building powerful alliances with the community in which I was raised. I have been on a lifelong journey to learn why racism was created and what we can look forward to without it. 

Race for What? provides stories with a unique perspective from a white man’s experience and illustrates seven steps to healing. In the seven steps, I encourage white people to work through the emotional and psychological obstacles and see the value of repairing and healing the harm racism has caused.

Q What is your writing inspiration?

JD Mass

It was a combination of three things.  First and foremost, I spent my entire life being lived by and loving black folks.  Second, in 2017 I achieved my doctorate in Organizational Psychology which gave me the tools to communicate my vision effectively.  Third having been heavily involved in white antiracism groups in Los Angeles and later in St. Louis I learned that I have a valuable and unique perspective to share.  All of this combined inspired me to write Race for What?

Q What is the core message you want to deliver to the world through your writing?

I am witnessing a desire for change to the dominating way of our culture.  I believe that if we continue to work at it, humanity is achievable.  I am encouraging white folks to stay the course, work through the pain, fear and discomfort of letting for of our desire for control and privilege.  Together we can finally correct the harm of racism.

Q What is something you learned while writing this book?

I learned that writing a book is no easy task.  I learned that I needed the help and support of others and I had to use the struggles that so many others are in for justice to motivate me to continue to complete my mission. 

Q If you could give your book to one person in the entire world to read, who would it be and why?

Ice Cube.  His music and movies have contributed to my development that led to my ideas shared in my book. I am a huge fan of his work, his art, and his commitment to the healing of his people. I believe that my book supports the Contract with Black America in which he worked with some of the greatest minds that have also influenced and taught me.  My book is meant to offer a white man’s perspective to support him and other black folks and organizations dedicated to the healing of marginalized and oppressed communities.

Q. Can you tell us three fun facts about you?

1) My three favorite athletes of all time are Allen Iverson, Albert Pujols, and Russell Westbrook for how they played their sport and how they carry themselves outside of their profession. 

2) My vegan breakfast sandwich that I used to make was listed as the best tasting vegan food item by the top blogger in LA in 2010

3) One of my favorite moments in my life was creating remakes of popular songs with my son to reflect whatever was going on in our lives.

Bonus: Nelly and I from our high school time, before he became famous, used to buy cheap tickets to Cardinals baseball games and eventually work our way down to field level so we could be heard by the players.

We spoke with author Harrison Taylor about his newest book, Those Who Hunt Wolves. His inspiration comes from movies and cinema, and after reading his thriller, we can see why.

Q. Can you tell us about your book?

A: Those Who Hunt Wolves is a techno action thriller that is about two covert agents, Shepard and Graham. Both are gunned down and left for dead by a secret organization known as 7721. The two former agents survive and exact revenge by stealing a dangerous and secret weapon from 7721 known as the Blackout.

Q When did you decide to write this story and why?

A: This Story has been on my mind for years. I started it about four years ago, however the idea first came when I wrote a script about 16 years ago about a heist gone wrong.

Q What is your favorite passage from your book?

A: I tried to give them the impression that I was scared, but let’s face it: That’s like asking a crocodile not to fucking smile, right?

Q What makes your book unputdownable?

A: The action is constant. The story and plot engage and always move forward. As I writer I believe every word has a place and that is to support moving the story forward in an exciting way. I feel this book succeeds in that sense.

Grateful Labs is working to help the mental health of many through technology, art, and gratitude at A Street-Art Installation & Wellness Festival in Tel Aviv. This installation was live from March 25th, 2022, to April 9th, 2022, at Tel Aviv’s Habima Square. 

Two weeks really doesn’t seem like a lot of time to achieve a lot, however they had over a thousand visitors to their festival and gratitude wall. Packed with community-based events for everyone, the event was a gigantic success. There was yoga, music-based healing, meditations, art, wellness, and gratitude practices, all taking place by the wall.  This was the first of many Gratitude Walls that will be installed in a variety of locations in the coming year.

During the last two years, the COVID-19 pandemic, and all the lockdowns and restrictions have negatively impacted the well-being and mental health of so many people around the world. Max Marine, CEO and Co-Founder of Grateful Labs realized mental illness was ravaging through the pandemic and decided to create something that has never been seen before, to help people all over the world. Marine and his team created the first of its kind Street-Art installation to bring communities together, to remind people that gratitude is important.  It is scientifically proven to raise happiness levels and improve overall well-being. 

Following the success of their installation, the company is looking at more sites for walls soon. Grateful Labs chose a Giraffe to be the focus for this installation because of the Giraffe’s symbolism, representing the balance between the heart and head. In addition, the company is turning their success into an NFT and wellness program to be launched this June.  This NFT and many more will be available for purchase on their website. Marine chose to turn it into NFT, because the NFT community is a very tight knit and caring group that is supportive of social causes.

Marine combined art, technology (AI), and the practice of gratitude to install happiness and well-being back into people’s lives. The practice of gratitude has been around for centuries.  According to Positivepsychology.com: “Every time a person expresses or receives gratitude, dopamine releases in the brain. Dopamine, a neurotransmitter, is produced in two areas of the brain: the substantia nigra and the ventral tegmental. The former has to do with movement and speech, the latter with reward (Carter, 2009).”
